Y.Y., 31, is a single mother by casualty of the Civil War. In 2007 she married a man very quickly – within a few days of meeting – as unmarried women were forced to join the LTTE (Tamil Tigers). Her family did not know at the time that her now husband was already married. The relationship went poorly, and in 2011 and pregnant with her second daughter, she ran away from her husband’s house seeking safety and refuge amongst her own family. She currently lives with her daughters, ages 6 and 4, and her brother’s family. While she is a single mother and not a war widow, her situation was also a form of war casualty. Her story is also the story of many young women who married quickly during the last years of the conflict and are now raising children alone.
